Angela Kusuma

Angela Kusuma

As a young girl, Angela Kusuma dreamed of being a professional dancer, but as John Lennon says ‘life is what happens when you’re making other plans’.  Now, Angela is delighted to be able to re-live that dream with the MTL performing compay.

Find out more about Angela by reading her answers to our Q&A below.

Tell us about your early dance journey?  Where did you start and what did you do as a child?

My first dance lesson was traditional Balinese dance when I was around 6 years old. Then I fell in love with ballet, but was only able to learn it for five years when I was in high school.

***

What is your earliest memory of dance?

Of ballet it was when I tried some of the ballet movements and poses through Japanese comic books which tells about ballerinas, and this was the reason I fell in love with ballet in the first place.

***

Where have you trained and who were your teachers as a dancer?

I joined ‘Sumber Cipta’ Ballet School in Jakarta, Indonesia, with Yasin Dionisius and Farida Oetoyo as my teachers.

***

What is your favourite thing about dance?

I feel joy when I do ballet movements and poses combined with the music. I can forget all of my problems and only be in that moment with all the movements.

***

What is your favourite thing about performing?

I love doing dance routines and challenge myself with a performance. To be able to perform with perfection is such a satisfaction for me.

***

What dance styles are you most drawn to?

Ballet, and I’m really interested with contemporary too now

***

What are your top three favourite dance movies?

I love ‘Center Stage’ and ‘Save the Last Dance’

***

What are your dance goals, dreams, or aspirations?

My childhood dream was being a professional dancer, but my life doesn’t go that way apparently. Joining MTL means I can relive that dream again, so now I’m dreaming of learning more dance moves and styles.

***

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received.

“Do what you love” and something Jo (MTL studio owner) says “You’re never too old to dance” 🙂

***

What keeps you motivated when you are tired, discouraged, or down?

That I love to dance no matter what.

***

Why did you decide to audition for the MTL Performing Company?

Because I love to dance and perform, and I want to challenge myself

***

How did you hear about Move Through Life?

I found about MTL in Clarence Park Community Center when I looked for a fitness activity for myself.

What is your favourite thing about being part of the MTL Performing Company?

MTL community is very supportive and non-judgmental. I love how the teacher (for me it’s Jo) is very kind and give the best effort to help us learn.

***

What hobbies do you have outside of dance?

I do some sewing on my free time

***

What is your ‘day job’? (could be working, studying, volunteering etc)
